Inflamación de la úvea, la capa media del globo ocular.

La uveítis anterior, que afecta al iris, al cuerpo ciliar (que contiene el músculo que acomoda el cristalino) o a ambos, puede conducir al glaucoma y a la ceguera. La uveítis posterior, que afecta a la coroides (que contiene el suministro de sangre del ojo), puede causar sangramiento, opacidad del cristalino y atrofia del globo ocular. La uveítis granulomatosa (inflamación persistente que deja una superficie granulosa) causa alteraciones de la visión, dolor, ojos lacrimosos y sensibilidad ante la luz. La uveítis no granulomatosa produce menos dolor y sensibilidad, con mejores posibilidades de recuperación. Sus causas abarcan infecciones y otras enfermedades generalizadas, reacciones alérgicas y lesiones. En raras ocasiones también puede haber síntomas en el ojo sin lesiones, con riesgo de ceguera bilateral. El tratamiento está dirigido a eliminar la infección, disminuir la inflamación y preservar la visión.
